The outbound journey and the inbound journey are considered travel days? Yes or no?

Yes AND no-they count as part of travelday-you could also go in that day till as far as you can manage.

And as on that travelday if using an overnite train you can stay on it till the end, f.e. from South Germany to Milano and then use the Treni di Notte till Sicily.

OR you could use it to go airport, fly over and use again at other end, in case you are not overworried by climate concerns.

So the main thing to know it is NOT an extra free add-on!
