You should be fine then as the closure ends at 3pm (after Domodossola). For example fully by train:- RE Brig - Domodossola 13:22 - 13:54- time to check out the city center, nothing too special- R Domodossola - Milano Centrale 14:56 - 16:35 (possible to stop in Stresa and take a later train)I believe they don't care running buses between 10am and 3pm. There is a single bus to Arona at around midday but it takes forever.During the 3 month closure they will indeed take the motorway.So you have the itinerary above or the (pretty much) hourly trains between Domodossola and Locarno.

Yes you’ll be fine for the large works on 5th June. There is though the year-long closure between 10am and 3pm on weekdays but you can probably pass through the zone earlier.Otherwise take the scenic detour via Locarno (Centovalli railway, cute little metric gauge trains). Then reservation-free hourly RE to Milan.Paris - Rouen: availability is not an issue, maybe apart from Friday evenings when all students go home for the weekend.

Have I missed out on window seats?

So I had a look at the OBB website and there’s a PDF about the works. From what I understood (translated from Czech) the works begin at 09:10 on 10th May* so it’s possible that your train still runs from Ceske Budejovice to Linz as it goes through that section at 9am.Otherwise you’ll have to connect to a well-timed bus : guaranteed connection, 08:06 departure and 10:00 arrival (the bus is faster than the train on this winding railway haha).There’s 99% chance you make the connection in Linz, don’t worry. :)Remember that the pass is your ticket. You’re allowed to take any train with it.*your travel date from what I remember.

So it will be Eurostar straight to Paris, no alternatives.Then you’ll have to go via Switzerland as the direct Paris - Milan trains don’t run at the moment due to a landslide. In addition the Simplon route (Domodossola - Milan) is closed for engineering works until 8th September: replacement buses are in place but it would take too long in my opinion.The best option is roughly Paris - Basel/Zurich - (Lugano) - Milan - Venice. Paris - Strasbourg - Basel/Zurich - … works too.Personally I’d spend a night in Paris and leave early the next morning with the 07:22 TGV towards Basel/Zurich. You’ll be grateful to have a nice evening in Paris, rather than a 2h train journey in the dark after an exhausting day across the city! That’s my opinion of course.The itinerary could look like this:TGV Paris Gare de Lyon - Zürich HB 07:22 - 11:26 EC Zürich HB - Milano Centrale 12:33 - 16:50* FR Milano Centrale - Venezia Mestre 17:15 - 19:28 (+ 10 min to reach the more centrally located Santa Lucia train st

Swiss pass for Zurich-Lucern-Grindelwald

Busy plan indeed! With that limited time Milan doesn’t deserve a stop honestly. It’s a business city and Florence and Milan are both more beautiful and interesting.It wouldn’t be the same views in Grindelwald or on the Bernina railway but it remains the Alps after all. You can always come back too. :)I guess I’d go to Lucerne/Titlis on 29th April and immediately leave via the Bernina route on 30th. As you reach Milan by 15:40 there’s plenty of time to get to Florence in the late afternoon.Have a nice dinner in Florence and visit the city the following day (1st May) before a late afternoon train to Venice.Hope you’ll still be able to enjoy a bit the cities!

With Eurail seat reservations cost extra, they’re all available online. There is an extensive guide from Seat61 posted above.For example you must add 30€ per person for the Eurostar. There is a passholder quota too for this train (unique in Europe) so you must book well in advance.If you don’t go the Eurail path you’ll have to buy tickets (online). The earlier you buy the cheaper they will be. High-speed train tickets vary like air fares and become very expensive closer to travel date (if not sold out). Often 1st class tickets cost 5-10€ so definitely go for it!In 2024 you can’t really get tickets on the day at the station, at least not for high-speed trains and not for a group of 6 travelling together.This starting page is helpful: https://www.seat61.com/european-train-travel.htmDon’t worry, I’m sure you’ll get the gist of it quickly. Swiss pass for Zurich-Lucern-Grindelwald

Titlis is definitely not the most expensive out there! 70 CHF or so per person is a reasonable price for a 3000 m peak. Yes tickets are available on the day for the same price. Ask for the 25% Eurail discount there.If you’re going to Milan on 1st May you have the whole 30th April to discover and enjoy the Grindelwald/Interlaken area, right? Or must you reach Milan by 30th April evening?Note that the slide isn’t open until 8th May: https://www.pfingstegg.ch/index.php/en/activities/tobogganRight now there is fresh snow, rather than melting snow! You should compare the prices of advance tickets vs pass + reservations. Definitely do not wait until getting there as trains could be sold out (especially Eurostar) and/or they will be very expensive.The 4 or 6 couchettes compartment would be for the Stuttgart - Venice night train. All other trains will have open-plan seating.

The last high-speed trains usually leave Paris at 8:30-9pm. Afterwards you’re kinda stuck there (while trains in Germany run 24 hours a day).To catch the Stuttgart - Venice night train* you’d have to leave Paris at 15:55. Not really ideal considering you can get in Paris not earlier than 09:18.Honestly I’d spend the night there or take the last TGV to Strasbourg (20:24 - 22:25) and then travel during the day. By leaving Strasbourg at 7:30am you can reach Venice by 4:30pm.You should also consider whether a pass makes sense over regular tickets. Seat reservations cost extra with Eurail and are required on high-speed trains. Prices vary, have a look at: https://www.seat61.com/interrail-and-eurail-reservations.htm*Right now a couchette in a 6 people compartment costs 45€, 60€ in a 4 people one (prices with a pass). I used the dates you mentioned in your other thread.

Let’s keep the discussion in this thread.At what time are you arriving in Paris? Which date (very important for availability and engineering works along the way) ?As you can see on the map above there is a night train from Stuttgart to Venice. It is however quite expensive. A second option would be to go via Nice but you’ll spend the next day travelling.Honestly until the Paris - Italy night train return in a few years (hopefully!) the best itinerary is to travel during the day. You’ll get nice views of the Alps too. :)Something like Paris - Geneva/Lausanne - Milan - Venice works well. Or you could spend the night in Geneva/Lausanne and take the direct EC to Venice early the following morning.

Swiss pass for Zurich-Lucern-Grindelwald

You already have the Global Pass so definitely do not get the Swiss Travel Pass. It would be a complete waste of money.Are 29th and 30th April full days? I'd go to Lucerne and Titlis (25% discount with Eurail) or Rigi (50%) on day 1. The second day go to the Interlaken area -> boats on Lake Thun and Brienz are fully included in Eurail!Or the other way around depending on the weather. Do not book anything in advance, you don't want to lose hundreds of CHF to end up in the fog...

I was suggesting to book the AVE to Lyon at a Spanish counter (since you seem to live there) and the TGV online in advance through Rail Europe. Nothing too risky! :)Note that there is no passholder quota (except on Eurostar + TGVs out of Brussels) so as long as regular tickets are available passholder reservations are too.Btw availability is rarely an issue on Lyon - Paris as there are trains every 30-60 min.SNCF still cooperates with SBB, DB. I don't think they were ever in partnership with NS (unless you include Eurostar).

It might also be that Rail Planner struggles with night trains as they are often coupled/decoupled during the night.You might have to add the journey manually in the end (which is totally allowed).

Travelling to Italy from UK with 4 children!!

Since this is a European train forum I might suggest to do the whole journey by train from the UK!There are beautiful Alpine railways and it would be a shame to miss them. For example the Bernina Railway fits perfectly on a UK-Italy itinerary. A relaxing way to cross the mountains after high-speed trains through the French countryside. There is no passholder quota except for Eurostar and TGVs out of Brussels.Some reservations are required this summer, due to frequent overcrowding. They’re all available though OBB (https://shop.oebbtickets.at/en/ticket ). You do not have to make them right now and could wait until closer to departure.1 and 2 : small-ish trains and popular routes. Reservations are required over the summer period.3 : passholder supplement for the Tarvisio cross-border section (10€ 2nd class, 15€ 1st). Reservatiosn very recommended. All available through OBB as I said. ;)4 : reservation optional, loooong trains with a thousand seats (ICE4 units). No issue to find something.

They are indeed not available at Spanish counters anymore since RENFE and SNCF ended their cooperation.You can book TGV seats through Rail Europe (desktop version) : 35€ to Paris, no fees, no passholder quota.However you could book AVE reservations for the train to Lyon (10€) at a Spanish counter and then change there for a TGV (10€ limited fare, 20€). It doesn’t take much more time so it mainly depends on whether you prefer a double or single decker train! :)

Yes not an issue. Book through Nightjet to avoid fees.Btw the following day to get to Florence I’d buy a ticket, rather than using a second pass day. They cost 15€, fixed price and always available. If you buy a paper ticket at the station, don’t forget to validate it through a machine on the platform.Enjoy!

The Polish domestic night trains are cheap. However they’re not easy to book… You can book them on cd.cz. But you sometimes have to be fast. Booking opens 30 days in advance. I indeed tried. Seats work fine but not for the couchettes (while they’re available on intercity.pl). But maybe I did something wrong… very plausible haha

Let me know if it doesn’t work.I also see the same option as you : 2 x 34.90€ in 6 people shared compartments and 2 x 39.90€ in 4 people ones. I’d definitely choose the latter.There are also alternative night trains :NJ Munich - La Spezia 20:10 - 11:10 → later arrival so longer night sleep, great views of the Mediterranean and Cinque Terre in the morning (289.80€ for a private double compartment though...) NJ Vienna - Florence (coupled during the night) → however it’s not less expensive nor with better availabilityFeel free to ask anything.
