You can travel on the hourly local trains over the route of the Glacier Express. On the Bernina Express route you can travel in the ‘ordinary’ coaches. My experience was that the trains had large windows, some of which opened. One train had a limited number of seats that were not reserved for parties - the ‘Golden Pass’ train from Montreux.
I have travelled a number of times by EMR to London and back from East Midlands. My best guess is that you will be ok in first class on their trains without a reservation. When things go smoothly, the transfer from Eurostar to EMR is easy, in the same building. There are only a few seats near the barriers for EMR, so you might not be able to sit down before the EMR train.
Re-installing the App worked. It knew which days I had been travelling but I had to enter a new Trip, with my forthcoming journey home. This did work, but I was nervous during the whoie process. Going to and around Switzerland with Interrail has been a great experience overall.
Being stuck in Switzerland without a working pass, unable to contact Customer Service to sort this out, goes beyond a simple request with an answer in the FAQs. Not even the lady at Interlaken West could get hold of them.
Thank you. When it works, I am finding Interrail very good. When it failed I found it highly worrying. They seem to make it as difficult as possible to contact them.Martin
Thank you for the prompt reply. Re-installing the App did work. It made me create a new Trip, but I could not transfer any existing journeys to the new trip. I have recreated them - international trains mainly for which I have reservations to get me home. This has been very worrying - as you do not know whether it is going to work. What kind of company changes its software without notice, leaving customers unable to travel, far from home?A lady at Interlaken West spent ages with me yesterday, trying to get the App to work. I could not contact Customer Services and neither could she! She sold me a ticket to Brig and gave me a letter asking staff here to refund the cost. Great service. It is great to have you, as volunteers, helping travellers with problems like this. I think that you all should make it clear that Interrail has unreliable IT, under-staffed customer service, and can leave travellers unsupported and really worried a long way from home, with no apparent route home. Can I make
My experience changing travel plans because of Covid was that it was easy to change dates and times online (more than a week before travel) but impossible to get hold of anyone at Eurostar on the phone. Although flying might be cheaper, you should find Eurostar much easier to board at St Pancras than getting through an airport. I hope that you hve a good trip.
A note of caution. I made my first trip by Eurostar recently. Some of the window seats do not line up well with the windows and, even if they do, a lot of the scenery is hidden by cuttings, tunnels and sound barriers, particularly in England.
I would add the Cambrian Line in Wales. Attractive from Shrewsbury to Machynlleth, then dramatic twisting along the coast, in part squeezed between sea and hills, to Porthmadog and Pwllheli. And the line from Llandudno to Blaenau Ffestiniog. After the wild uplands there is a long tunnel, then the train emerges into huge tips of slate.
Thank you, rvdborgt, for a clear answer. I will try this out. Mcadv, Switzerland is my main destination and, yes, travelling without seat reservations looks great.
