I went to the Austrian rail site OEBB and did a search between some smaller towns, and it gave me bus routes instead of train routes. Does the Global Pass cover those buses? It seems they might be operated by OBB or affiliated with it. For example between Oztal and Reutte. (By the way, I did a search from Vienna to Hallstat on the Eurail site and it came up empty, so thats why I started using the OEBB site)
My understanding is that the global pass is good for Turkey. However, I don’t see man cities in Turkey appear in the real planner app at all. For example, Cappadocia (Turkey) in the planner at all, nor Kayseri which seems to be relatively close. Similarly, Izmir does not appear nor the rail station at Turan. When I put Istanbul in the station section, it does not show any destinations at all. Can someone please explain how to do this or how this works? Thanks in advance.
The guide book says there is a Hallstat train station across the lake from Hallstat. Rome2Rio says there is a train to Hallstat. But the Eurail planning app says there is no such trip. Can someone reveal the secret of how to get this into the app? Thanks
Using the Eurail planning app in Vienna, Austria is pretty problematic. Vienna has at least three separate stations if not more. When you attempt to find a train from Vienna to Salzburg for example, it just shows Vienna until you click it and then you see which station - which is sorta inconvenient but workable. Keep in mind it might take 30 minutes to get from one station to another via undergrounds, so its vital to get this right. But it gets worse. Sometimes it shows Wien Meidling as station and sometimes not when looking for Vienna. But we found that there actually was a train leaving from there, which did not appear in the app. Finally found it by looking specifically for Meidling Wien. I have no idea how many other valid trains are not appearing.
I am using the Eurail app and looking at trains from Stresa, Italy to Milan. All of the trips I am seeing in the app are about 2 hours (1:42, 2:31, 2:41, 2:38, 2:41) and many of them involve buses. In fact, the shortest trip is all on bus. I tried several different days and they are all long trips. I have personally taken the train several times as recently as 1 year ago, and know its under 1 hour, maybe even 0:50. Its the same train ride from Domodossola through Stresa down to Milan. Is the app having problems, or are the train tracks out of commission? Last year, a track was under construction in France for a few weeks. I don’t know how to find that in Italy.
Thus must be a simple question available somewhere but could someone tell me what EU countries accept Eurail global pass which are not in Schengen zone? I think UK is one. Maybe Scandinavian countries?
It’s been on the news that franz is closing its borders to UK travelers. But I just read on France 24 news that they are also banning travel from France into England for nonessential purposes such as travel or family visits. first of all can anyone confirm that? Second I’m booked with Euro store on Monday but I’m wondering about trying to go Saturday instead. I assume it’ll have to just lose the other reservation fee and book a new train?
Various cities don’t appear at all, or only appear using alternative spellings : A. Neither Fussen nor Füssen (Germany) appear in the app at all - but they do appear in the DB app. I had to add the trips manually. B. Nor does Lubeck/Lübeck appear in the app, but Lubecca does. C. Munich can be found using the German or English spelling but not Nuremburg, Cologne, et. The train company DB runs a bus from Fussen to Schloss Schwanstein, but the driver refused to accept the rail pass and had to pay full fare (but only 2.50 eu each way) The planning app ignores a connection from Nuremburg to Rotthenburg that goes through Ansback and saves 30 minutes of time - which does appear in the DB app. I was able to enter each leg of that journey as a separate trip. (It was 3 trains in each directions, so six train trips round trip). Booking a trip from Munich to Hamburg nearly caused a problem because the planning app automatically went from Munich to the first remote station of Hamburg (Harburg) -
The Eurail Planning app says there are half a dozen trains from Annecy France to Geneva Switzerland on Sunday. However, when I check the French Oui-scnf app, it shows no trains Trainline also shows no trains at all. A local fellow says there are no trains or not dependable, and recommends the bus. But the Eurail app still shows these train trips - they are TER (SCNF) trains with numbers and stops listed out. Can anyone explain what is going on? Is the planning app wrong, or is SCNF wrong? I am not sure if the train office will be open on a Sunday to ask them.
I wonder if anyone could inform me how to handle this situation if it arises again. I had my ugliest train experience in Switzerland, on the 18 minute train ride from Lauterbrunnen to Interlaken. This train line is not SBB and so not offer free rides, but does give a 25% discount with the pass. I bought two paper tickets - which would have been about 7 chf each but were discounted to 5 chf or so. So I saved 2 chf using the pass. A conductor questioned me about it - and wanted to see the QR code for the pass. Since the train trip does not even appear in the rail planner, I had no idea how I could generate a ticket. This was further compounded by having no internet access. I am not sure if I could have added it manually or what to do. This conductor was almost yelling at us like she had caught some criminals sneaking on the train, and demanding we go with her to the office at the terminus. Are there some magic words that you can say to train employees that help them understand the pass and it’s discounts? I was just in a French station and they wanted 40eu for two people to take a 20 minute high speed train trip. I have always paid 20eu even to take a 4 hour high speed train. when I was in Spain I could see their computer screen and apparently there are 20 different passes they can choose from. I tried to tell the lady in the station today that it was a Eurail pass but she had no interest in seeing the details. As a result we are wasting a few extra hours take slow trains today.
My two 90 day global passes are on my iphone. But the phone continues to have problems and finally Apple will replace it. However they don’t stock American phones in European stores so I need to wait roughly a week for them to ship a replacement to this Apple store. I don’t even have an exact date. In the meantime, we will be moving on to some new cities. I will be waiting for Apple to call me to know when to come pick up the new phone. Apple refuses to have it delivered to an Apple store in the new region, so I will have to come all the way back to get the new phone. When I get a new phone I will probably lose the authorization for the Eurail Pass since it’s locked into the old phone. so that means that when I leave the Apple store and try to get back to the city that we’re currently staying in I won’t have a Rail Pass anymore until Eurail can give me a new authorization. I’m currently in Spain and trying to book a night train from Switzerland. It allows me to pay for the reservation but it says it’s going to send me a paper ticket. However I don’t have a fixed address and afraid that paper ticket will get lost somewhere. Isn’t there any option to get any electronic ticket or have them hold it at the station in Zürich? I can just travel across Europe and arrive in Zürich not knowing whether I have a night train or not. pS - i’ve tried calling the help number for OBB several times and it’s just an endless loop of German. I don’t know if they ever answer at all. Healthier your instructions are slightly off. Pressing one doesn’t do anything at all. Also the new longer open 24 hours. But I’m not sure if they take 20 minutes to answer or two hours. And it’s running down my Skype credit every time I’m just sitting here on hold because it’s strangely much more expensive than calling other foreign countries.
Just to let other people know there is the possibility of no trains. I am in Spain and wanted to leave in 10 days to France. I could not find a train. I went to the French train app and it seems they were sold out for 5 days. I went to the train station in Spain to reserve the first available day after that. I was told there are available seats for purchase but not for global pass holders. And this was true for every day for at least a week. The result is that there is a two week period where the pass is useless. I ended up buying a full price ticket without the pass and cutting my trip short. I guess I can come back in a few years to see Southern Spain the next trip.
