Use the second outbound/inbound in the most efficient way

Hi!

I’m in the following position: I have a 4-days-in-a-month global pass, my home country is Germany. I have used one outbound/inbound journey on one travel day to Italy. Traveling back I will go from Bologna to Munich and from Munich to Frankfurt. But the Munich-Frankfurt bit is after midnight so I need to buy a separate ticket because I’ll already use the second outbound/inbound trip for Kufstein-Munich.
 

Now, my question is: Could I do the reverse too? Use my pass for Bologna-Kufstein and buy a separate ticket on oebb for Kustein-Munich (which would cost less than Munich-Frankfurt) and use the outbound/inbound for Munich-Frankfurt on the additional travel day? Or is this not possible because I wouldn’t cross the border on the additional travel day? I ask this because there’s the real possibility I won’t use that extra travel day that I would use for Munich-Frankfurt anyway.

Kufstein nach München kaufen geht auch. Die Rückfahrt ins Heimatland gilt ja auch z.B. von einem Flughafen. 

Oder du fährst schon um 21.51 Uhr oder 22.53 Uhr nach Frankfurt, dann braucht es gar keine zusätzliche Fahrkarte (aber ich nehme an, du willst später fahren?). 

Hat sich da ein Global Pass überhaupt gelohnt, wenn auch noch tendentiell ein Tag über ist?

Auch von einem Flughafen? Wusste ich nicht. Genau, der Zug, den ich nehmen möchte, fährt nach Mitternacht ab. 
 

Schwierig zu sagen, ist auf jeden Fall suboptimal.

Do you really need to go via Munich ? It can be quicker going via Basel.

For example

Bologna Centrale 16:56 - Milano Centrale 18:00

Milano Centrale 18:20 - Basel SBB 22:37

A 20-min connection in Milan seems quite tight, especially with your onward journey, but you could leave Bologna earlier.

Basel SBB 23:13 - Frankfurt (Main) Hbf 02:54

Of course I'd recommend an earlier connection but it depends on your schedule. There is a direct train between Milan and Frankfurt leaving at 11:20 every day too.

I guess you know but be aware of the mandatory seat reservations in Italy for the high-speed trains (Frecciarossa, IC, EC)
