I was looking at booking a hostel/hotel in Hamburg on the 20th May. However, almost everywhere seems sold out/ really expensive. Is there some sort of event going on?

It is the Ascension holiday weekend so a lot of people will be travelling. Don't think you'll find less expensive but maybre try neighbouring towns
Btw seat reservations are recommended for that period (17th-21st May) in Germany, even if they're optional. Otherwise you'll surely have to stand
- 3€ per train on tickets.oebb.at (add Interrail as a discount and select one-way tickets)
- 4.50€ per journey on bahn.de
