In search of exoticness and foreignness in Europe!

Hi I’m a English student planning on travelling for the first time without family before university. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of routes to take starting from London, I love bustling cities but also serene mountains and other natural scenes. My big concern is that Europe isn’t exotic or foreign enough so want to find a route which provides that exoticness and cultural shock but am not quite sure where to start. Any tips are welcome, thank you!

Mmmm I'd suggest going from London to Sicily and maybe taking a ferry to Greece or Albania after that if you wish.

Some advice :

- Eurostar to Paris or Brussels and then high-speed trains to Basel/Switzerland

- cross the Alps on the Bernina railway, splendid all year-round

- spend a few days in Northern Italy or take the night train right away from Milan to Sicily : quite a journey and you wake up before the boat (see further)

- cross the Messina Strait on the last remaining European train ferry (carriages are loaded onto the boat) : a very cool experience !

- Sicily is quite different than the rest of Italy

Questions welcome !
