Hi Emily, in general it is no problem to do like that. But keep in mind that in Italy they sell only 50% of the seats right now - so especially on weekends trains might be sold out on a short notice. For Switzerland I suppose you want to reserve an EuroCity across the border to Italy? If your destination is only Milano, then that doesn’t pay off (11 euro only for the reservation). Better to take the Regional Express train from Lugano to Milano Centrale which is for free. Reservation on a short notice is also possible (as long as there are seats available).
