I’ve received a train reservation in the post and was wondering can I photocopy it and does the photocopy work?

If you ordered paper reservations when reservations are mandatory, then only the paper reservations are valid.
For optional reservations, it doesn't really matter, since ticket inspectors don't need to see them. You only need them to find your seat and sometimes to show others who are on your seat.
