I plan to go on an interrail trip to the Balkans in September. I would like to visit Belgrade - is there any chance to get there by train from Budapest? And does the train from Belgrade to Sofia run? (sofia is my next direction). Thank you in advance for your answer.

For Belgrade, please check this topic from earlier today:
For Belgrade to Sofia, it doesn't look good. Trains are not running because of engineering works in Serbia and I doubt this will change before September.
You should also check if Interrail isn't too expensive compared to normal tickets. Especially on the Balkans and in eastern Europe, normal tickets can be cheaper.
