I treated myself to a 1st class Interrail pass - it looked like a good idea at the time.  The problem is now trying to make a seat reservation, since obviously reservations are not included in the Interrail pass, when they do not even know you are going to travel on a given train.  In Germany, seat reservation is included for 1st class tickets, so you do not get the offer, on the bahn.de page, to just reserve a seat for the first class (without buying a ticket).  How do I do this ?  Do I have to go to the local railway station, where they have already told me that they know nothing about Interrail, to make a reservation which is possibly impossible to make ?

Sure you can book reservations via DB in first class. Go to the DB website, select first class and click on Seat only / Nur Sitzplatz.

Remember you can book multiple trains in one journey for the same price via DB.
