I'm trying to make a reservation for myself with a global interrail pass and somebody without a interrail pass. How can I make sure we are seated next to each other?

For which train(s) exactly? If you can book the seat reservation via DB (click on Seat Only), then do that. You can often choose your seat and it's much cheaper than via Interrail.
