We want to book a train from napoli to catania, but when we try this the interrail website says we first have to go from Napoli to Florence and then to Catania. This only takes a lot of time while there is also a direct train from Napoli to Catania on the website of Trenitalia. Does someone know what is wrong? And if we even need a seat reservation for this train?

Italiarail has a dedicated site for Interrail pass holders.

The full Italian summer timetable hasn’t been published yet + Rail Planner/Interrail is very unreliable for planning. Use bahn.de. There are direct trains between the two cities, don’t worry. It is a fantastic journey as you cross the Messina Strait on the last European ferry-train crossing.
You can have a look at next week’s timetable, it shouldn’t change much.
- Napoli Centrale - Catania Centrale 13:45 - 21:37 3€ on tickets.oebb.at (no booking fee, add Interrail as a discount and select one-way tickets)
- Napoli Centrale - Catania Centrale 09:50 - 17:21 3€
- for the night train it is more complicated, use italiarail.com and it should work
