Greetings,

I am looking for advice for travel arrangements by rail from Budapest to Croatia (destination to be determined, based on ease of travel). We have 4 days to spend and our next stop will be Venice. A friend recommended Pula.

It is looking like trains to Pula or Rijeka are upwards of 10 hours in duration and are just generally, more difficult to get to. Is there a sleeper car? Is there an easier way to get to Croatia from Budapest? Is there somewhere else we should consider visiting instead?

Trains aren't exactly fast and frequent in that area. There is a night train between Zagreb and Split but for Rijeka or Pula you'd have to spend the night in Zagreb.

Other option : direct night train between Budapest and Split in summer, however it is incredibly popular. When would you like to travel ?

Alternative : if you don't care about beaches, Ljubljana and Slovenia in general are easier to reach and towards Venice. The direct train leaves Budapest-Déli at 09:00 and arrives in Ljubljana at 16:35.
