We will travel to (Sweden and) Norway at the beginning of September. We are not yet 100% sure how long we want to stay in the Lofoten, so we are thinking about being spontaneous and reserving night train seats from Bodo to Oslo only a few days in advance.

Considering September is not the main holiday season anymore, is it realistic to make the reservation that late and ideally also get sleeper places? Or do we need to make the reservations much more in advance? Any experience values?

Begenning of September might still be half season 😉 Off season it's quite okay when you travel on weekdays. Fridays and Sundays are a bit busier.

Seats shouldn't be a problem anyhow, proper sleeper carriage is difficult to predict.

But should there be no shows or unoccupied beds/berths, the conductor usually announces to seat passengers to come and see him or her to get you upgraded.
