I have only taken an overnight train from Budapest to Belgrade and for me...well we didn’t opt for a sleeper cabin and I barely got any sleep...nothing like travelling through the night with one eye open, especially at a border checkpoint (when you have never encountered) that process before.  Curious what travellers thoughts are.

Depends on the train i could sleep very well on the Nightjet connections and on the routes operated by Swedish Rail  SJ or Ceske Drahy aswell :) besisdes from the border control at 01.00 i slept very well on the Nighttrain Bucharest - Vienna :) i prefer sleeper over Couchette :)

Yes! Couchettes or sleeper cabins are the only way for me to travel overnight. Like you said, in a seat you arrive at your destination tired. Just try it out once and see if it's for you. Some people can't seem to sleep on a riding train, while I and others don't have any problems.
