Reservations are optional but the operator in Italy wants an extra supplement from pass holders: €10 in 2nd and €15 in 1st class. On the ÖBB website, you pay extra if you want a reservation, so then €18 in total. To get the supplement via ÖBB, you must add the Interrail/Eurail discount, NOT check "Seat reservation only” and click on Find.

On the Eurail website, the reservation is included in the supplement (I think because they book through Trenitalia), but you pay an extra €2 booking fee, so €17 in total.

I can't see how to do that on the OBB site.

I'm also intrigued in that the cost of this journey using the Eurail pass plus the reservation & supplement fee isn't very different to just buying a ticket directly from OBB.

Does that sound about right or have I missed something else?  

Unless a ticket is 13€ 2nd class/18€ 1st class using Eurail will be cheaper, esp. if you take more than one train that day.

Go to the ÖBB website, look for you train and click on "change" as shown here. Then "add discount".

My point on pricing was very wrong.

I was comparing Eurail 1st class with obb 2nd class.
