Inbound trip interrupted by a train strike in Germany. How should we continue?

Our Interrail trip is coming to an end and so far everything has worked out well. Now we are planning to head back from Marseille to Germany (country of residence) on Thursday (2 September). Starting that day is a major train strike in Germany which means that we’ll probably be able to come into Germany from france (til Frankfurt) but can’t reach our final destination (Leipzig).

what options do we have now? We can’t wait it out in Frankfurt as we have nowhere to stay and the inbound travel day of our global pass will have been used due to the marseille - Frankfurt connection.

Hi Jojo,

I’m sorry for the inconvenience! If no train is running to Leipzig, then you will need to find an alternative means of transportation, I’m afraid. You can either decide to book it now, or wait and see how impactful the strike will be, for some trains might be running across Germany after all. If you get stuck in Frankfurt because of the strike, we can still look into the possibility of adding an extra inbound trip to your Pass.

You can ask the Station staff at Frankfurt for help :) Due the European Passenger rights they have to give you worst case a Hotel Voucher (if there is no train to Leipzig anymore) and make your ticket valid for the next day in case of Interrail they usually give a letter :)

Best is to show your planned route on phone or paper as proof it was possible without the strike
