Hey,

we have 2 Global Mobile Passes and would also like to use them to travel with our dog within Italy. We would also like to tike the Intercity Notte (Rome-Messina). How can we buy a ticket for our dog? Trenitalia and Italiarail only allow us to buy a dog ticket when we buy a human ticket at the same time which is more expensive than the reservation. Also we would not be able to be in the same compartment due to there being separate bookings.

How in the world can we book a ticket for our dog on an Intercity Notte (or any other Italian train other than slower, regional ones where dogs travel for free)?

You may ask a experiences ticket agency how to assist :)

As you are from Germany you may ask one of the “Bahnprofis”

I´ve had good experience with Gleisnost, Bahngentur Schöneberg, Kopfbahnhof & die Bahnfüchse

@rvdborgt  had good experience with another one (I guess it was the Agency in Lennestad?)

The night train reservation in Italy can be more expensive than a normal ticket. It depends on what's available. the cheapest normal fares can be cheaper than an Interrail reservation. Further, the Interrail website does not properly implement the current policy in Italy. If you book for 2 people, the Interrail website will give each a separate compartment. Although it is correct that Trenitalia currently only book complete compartments, you can be with multiple people in the same compartment if you book together. The Trenitalia website does book 2 people into the same compartment (if you select the same accommodation) but does not sell Interrail supplements.

Belgian railways also sell Italian night trains (by phone or at the ticket office). And German railways too (also ticket office or by phone), including Interrail reservations. Not sure if they sell tickets for a dog.

What you could do:

  1. Check normal available fare on www.trenitalia.com (only Trenitalia themselves sell the lower economy advance fares).
  2. Check with DB or Belgian railways what an Interrail reservation would cost.
  3. Book the one that is cheapest.
  4. If you can't buy a ticket for your dog yet, then do that in Italy at the ticket office. You'll have your own compartment so that should not be a problem.
