Hello, 

I searched trying to find an answer to this question but I still need some clarification. 

I would like to start my travel a few days AFTER my 28th birthday. Could I “activate” the pass the day before my birthday and pick a first travel day, but not actually use the train that day? Or is the pass not “activated” at the start of your first travel day if you don’t physically scan your pass at the train station and start your journey.

You only need to activate the pass and start the validity before you turn 28. You don't need to activate a travel day (if you have a flexi pass). If you have a continuous pass, then all days are travel days.
