Hello Friends,

I am from India and planning to explore few European cities between April 26 and May 13 with my husband and son (17 years next year).

Drafted the below plan:

  1.  Arrive from Chennai to Germany (thinking of either Frankfurt or Munich - which is the best place in Germany?).  Spend 3 nights with one day local sightseeing and a day trip to Heidelberg or another one.
  2. From Germany (either Munich or Frankfurt) - travel to Amsterdam.  Spend 4 nights with one day local sightseeing, one day trip to Keukenhof Gardens (might explore local tram/train if that is cheaper), and another to Zaanse Schans (might book with GetYourGuide)
  3. From Amsterdam to Paris.  Spend 4 nights with 2 day local sightseeing and a day trip to Versailles Palace (local train is cheaper).
  4. Paris to Lucerne. Spend the remaining nights in Lucerne and to visit Interlaken, Mt Pilatus, Mt. Titlis, and jungfraujoch (if not restricted during shoulder season).

Can you please advise if buying individual train tickets is cheaper or getting a Eurrail Pass will help with inter-country and local trains?

Note - I am flexible with skipping Germany and including Italy as well but for now excluded Italy as I see each city is far away (Rome, Milan, Florence, Vatican) and I will spending a long time traveling back and forth between each city if I base in one central city.

Appreciate your advice in advance.

Thanks & Regards.

Hello @FathimaMPlr

You can buy an Eurail Global Flexi Pass for long distance trains, this pass is also valid between two countries, and tickets for local excursions. Reservations and surcharges for high-speed trains are not included.

I think that Munich is a better choice as Frankfurt. You could perhaps add a day for an excursion in Germany, but check the prices. For example, if you go to the Neuschwanstein Castle from Munich, you have day tickets for local trains (Bayern-Ticket) which can be cheaper as a day of your Eurail Pass. A day of the pass is better if you want to take long distance trains (ICE), for example if you want to visit Nuremberg.

For excursions in Switzerland around Lucerne, I suggest the Tell Pass:

This pass is not valid for the Jungfraujoch, but, in my opinion, this destination is too expensive.
