Hello,

I want to take a global pass to go to athens from berlin without taking the plane but i have questions. I tried to look around for answers from the community but I couldn’t find an answer to every thing.

  • First, very basic question but just to make sure : if I take a night ferry after having traveled all day it still counts as 1 day travel right ? As long as every departure is before midnight
  • Then, we wanted to take the train from Athens to Zagreb on the way back but we couldn’t find anything. Since we are already taking the route that goes through Italy on the way there we wanted to take another one for the way back but nothing seems to exist : do you know if Athens-Zagreb is doable ? Otherwise we thought about Budapest or Beograd but same problem with the lack of connection.
  • We thought of a second option : to go through Italy again but with the ferry that does Patras-Venice but we saw that on ferries there are supposed to be additional fees : do you know approximately what these would cost ?
  • Also does every seat reservation require a fee? Or sometimes it’s just mandatory but free?

Thank you so much for your answers ❤ Really struggling here but this community is so useful !!

There are no trains from Thessaloniki into Bulgaria or Serbia. Almost no international trains into/ out of Serbia at all (except a connecting route from Budapest-Belgrade). That route is pretty much impossible, unless you take a lot of buses.

The most practical option, if you don’t want to go via Italy again, is use a bus to get across from Thessaloniki to Bulgaria, then pick up trains on the Sofia-Bucharest-Budapest route.

Best info is here: https://www.seat61.com/Greece.htm#Route_map

I think there are a few cases of free mandatory reservations, but most are in the range of a few Euros, up to tens of Euros. Full details here. Just select the starting country of each journey:

It’s a discount on the fare, rather than free travel.

You can search on bluestarferries.com for the Patras to Venice route. Choose your departure, and when you get to the next screen there’s a section to add the Eurail or Interrail discount. So you’ll see the total cost.

The ferry discount to/ from Italy doesn’t use a travel day. You just need to have a valid pass.
