Trains around Garmisch-Partenkirchen German Interrail validity

I would like to travel to Garmisch-Partenkirchen this summer using a German Interrail pass. I would come from the North and I would like to know if the pass is valid on some trains from Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

  • Is it valid on the Bayerische Zugspitzebahn ? It seems like I can use it up to Grainau station, but not further. Is this the case and can I get discounted tickets if I want to go up to the Zugspitze ?
  • The Außerfernbahn between Garmisch and Kempten is operated by Deutsche Bahn trains. Both ends of the line are in Germany, but it runs through Austria for part of the journey. Is a German Rail Pass valid on this line or do i have to go the long way round ?

Thank you for your answers !

You get a small discount on the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn. A return ticket for the entire route is €61 instead of €68 for an adult:

The Außerfernbahn is indeed operated by DB, but that line isn’t mentioned in any list with the validity of passes valid in Germany. Such lists only contain some lines in Switzerland and the Netherlands and not in Austria, e.g.:

@seewulf mentioned here that it should work as long as you travel between the 2 countries and don’t stop. Or at least the app doesn’t know that you’ve crossed the border.

the Außerfernbahn ist indeed part of German fare and Austrian VVT local fare.

Should work as Germany only.

At the Beförderungsbedingungen of DB on VVT area they say in German at point 2.2.

I would say if you transit, than it is included because for the rules it is like a normal ride on Deutsche Bahn. If you enter or exit in Austria you need a international fare ticket.
