Is it true if someone from the US gets sick in Scotland they cannot receive care without travel insurance?

Thank you,

Emergency care would always be provided but it is an incredibly stupid and potentially financially ruinous thing to travel internationally without adequate travel insurance.

The UK NHS provides free care for citizens and has reciprocal arrangements with most European countries public health authorities (EU and EEA)  through the EHIC scheme.

People from Europe without this free EHIC card or those from outside potentially would be faced with a bill for any medical treatment they receive.

In all cases without insurance you would be looking at the full cost of any private treatment and repatriation costs back to your home country which if under the care of a medical team is a very expensive service.

Oh, such harsh word “stupid.” It turned me off and I will have to come back to the read the answer. Thank you anyway.
