Hi!

As I’ve read in earlier posts the trains in the Balkans are quite tricky. I wondered if anyone could help me while I’m planning my trip.

I would like to go from Split (Croatia) to Bosnia, preferably Mostar, and from Bosnia to Montenegro. How would you make this journy? Is it possible to go by train or do we have to go by bus? Is it unnecessary for me to by an interrail pass?

There are almost no (international) trains in the Balkans, either due to political tensions, railways in bad state or in maintenance.

There are no railways from Split towards Bosnia, the only one goes to Zagreb.

There is a summer-only train from Ploče to Sarajevo via Mostar, running 2-3 times a week. Maybe it will run this summer, maybe it won't.

There are no trains between Bosnia and Montenegro. Belgrade (Serbia) - Podgorica - Bar is the only railway running in the area.

Honestly you'll have to rely on buses.

In any case Interrail wouldn't be good value at all as tickets are very cheap there.
