Good afternoon!

As the title says, everything was going smoothly with the eurail pass until we got to Switzerland. we bought a package for 3 adults that included a cable car from wengen-mannlichen, and a train ticket from kleine scheidegg-wengen with everything being discounted by 50% since we owned the pass and we only showed our activated passes to get the discount (NOT an active travel day). the issue came on the train ride where the ticket lady asked to see our tickets, which we showed, and proceeded to ask for our rail passes. we showed the activated passes but she asked to see the QR code from a travel day which we did not have. she immediately got visibly annoyed and said we have 30 seconds to activate a travel day otherwise she will fine us 270 CHF. since we were very confused, we said the guy we bought the tickets from only needed to see the active pass and she snapped (with very rude attitude) saying "too late you get the fine now"and proceeds to start writing it out. After a few minutes she then says again we have one last chance to activate a travel day (which we did) , scans them and walks off.

So, we were supposed to have a travel day active or did we get robbed?

Yes, you need to have an activated travel day for the discounted train ride here:

benefitsportal.eurail.com/benefits/jungfraubahn/

But it’s just 25% for the train ride.

It’s 50% for Wengen to Männlichen.

You may try to complain with Eurail because the conditions of use do give conflicting information: Eurail (p. 23, 6.).

thankyou for clarifying!!

In case of conflicting conditions, the one most favorable for passengers applies. That follows from general consumer legislation. Any fine is unjustified and the extra travel day too.

@Mukhammad @Camilo. Could you please clear this up with Jungfraubahnen. They are not allowed to request a travel day together with discounted tickets, as is specified in the Conditions of Use (Pass benefits section).

Hi everyone and @rvdborgt, thank you for flagging this up!

We are looking thoroughly to this case. The status quo is that our team is waiting for an answer from both SBB and Jungfraubahn. I'll let you know if there's an update and please kindly wait for it.

@Mukhammad Any idea whether this will be resolved before the travel season starts?

As it stands, Jungfraubahnen demand something that contradicts the conditions of use and are prepared to fine passengers who play by the rules. I hope you can agree that this situation cannot continue.

@rvdborgt I agree that the railway company should align with the conditions of use. In the last meeting with SBB they told us that they will take it up with the carriers to find common ground. However, up until this moment, no decision has been made and a further discussion is ongoing

Thanks for the update.

IMO however, you shouldn't even put anything on the website that contradicts the conditions of use.

With regards to above query

"Do you need to activate a travel day when using discounted tickets"

it is not solved?. Further discussion still ongoing?

This has been solved:

Jungfraubahnen now play by the rules.
