Leaving home country again

We bought 3 month passes in Switzerland, and have already used our Outbound and Inbound journeys, having travelled to UK, Belgium, Germany and Denmark before returning home.

Now we want to visit Salzburg in Austria, which means leaving Switzerland again - so my question is, do we need to buy a ticket to the final station we go through in Switzerland, or to the first station we pass through in Austria?

As I understand it, travel in Austria should be included in the pass.

Any help welcome!

Thank you in advance,

John

If possible you need to get a ticket to the border point where the train crosses the border to Austria. If that not is possible, you need a ticket to the first station in Austria.

If you have-like most zugli-friendly- Swiss that GA or HalbTax-GA covers it (or gleis 7 if you are young and use it > 19.00), to Austria direct are just 2 border points, Sargans is one (still in Swiss, the other ask SBB counter

From Zürich via Sargans you need a Ticket till Buchs (SG), from there it is ÖBB (Austria), if you use the app you have to add the train manualy as starting in Buchs SG (Austria) and not Switzerland. The train will run via Lichtenstein, wich is operated as Austria because trains are run by ÖBB.

Same via St.Gallen to Bregenz you need a Ticket till St. Margarethen, from there it is ÖBB. Same here like in Buchs.

St. Margrethen. The place with an extra “a” exists a few times in Austria :)

Oh my bad, thanks for the correction!

Thank you to everyone who responded - much appreciated!

There’s a direct train Zürich to Salzburg, which has its first stop in Austria at Feldkirch, so we’ll buy tickets from Zürich to Feldkirch.  The remainder of the trip (Feldkirch to Salzburg) will be on our Interrail passes.

You would be paying too much with a ticket to Feldkirch. You need a ticket to Buchs(SG) because the tariff border point is in that station. From there your pass will be valid. If you have a mobile pass, you'll need to enter a manual journey and put Buchs(SG) in Liechtenstein or Austria (instead of Switzerland), to avoid that the app uses (or tries to use) an inbound/outbound journey. This is a bug in the app: an incorrect implementation of border tariff points in stations.
