Strike in Italy (08 Oct)

Hi all,

I am going to Italy for the first time in my life and I want to take train from Rome to Milan on the morning of 8 Oct. 

I have checked on thetrainline.com and I saw from the government website (http://scioperi.mit.gov.it/mit2/public/scioperi)

There is a locale strike on 7 Oct 21.01 to 8 Oct 21.00 but it seems that I can still make reservation under Eurail.

Does anyone know how would it affect the train schedule from Rome to Milan? Or it is meaning that train will not arrive Milan on 8 Oct? Thanks so much in advance as I really have not much idea about Italy’s transport system.

@Angelo, do you have any idea what the impact could be?

I'll be travelling from Switzerland to southern Italy myself on the 8th so I'm possibly also affected.

Depends-IF this are the staff that mans the control centres-and esp. for a very big+main station like Milano, it may well effect about all main lines into that city from quite far afield. But nothing is certain by now. PLus that-due to the extremely high nr of strikes in ITaly there there is some kind of law that a MINimum service has to be provided-so that all the innocent customers relying on treni can reach work/school. How seriously that is taken I have no idea, nor if that would also apply to this.

It is of course also quite possible they reach an agreement before that day, and also there are no magic tiny liiliputs walking around in the www who immediately put all trips possibly related to this offline

Here is some useful information from the experienced travellers in the Community regarding both planning, reservations and activation of pass and travel days. 

 Planning

The rail planner is normally not up to date, as it only is updated once a month, so to be sure of the time table you better check the timetable and availability on the websites of the national railways. The bigger national railways, like DB (Germany) SBB (Switzerland) and ÖBB (Austria) cover several countries. 

 Reservations 

The advice from the experienced travellers in the community is to use other ways to make reservations than the Interrail/Eurail website.  You can look at the guide in the link:

If you, after having looked at the guide, have questions about how to make specific reservation, please give your travel details (departure date, time and route) preferably in a new topic, and you will get advice.

Please note that Interrail/Eurail charges an extra fee of 2 EUR per person and train in addition to the fee for the seat reservation.

 Activation of pass

During the activation process, when you choose the start day of the validity of the pass, the first day of the validity period is automatically made a travel day, even if you don't enter a journey, the advice is therefore not to activate the pass before the first travel day as you only can deactivate the pass before 00.00 on the day the validity starts. If your travel plans change in the last moment you will loose travel days if you have activated the pass in advance.

It can be wise to make a test and activate the pass with a start date well in the future and then deactivate the pass immediately, just to see that everything works.

 Activation of travel day

The advice from the experienced travellers in the community is also never to activate a travel day, that is connect a journey to your pass and create the QR code, until just before boarding the train, otherwise you might loose a travel day if your travel plans change in a late stage  You can't delete a travel day in the past. A travel day can only be deleted until 23.59 CET the day before the travel day.

I have no idea, the last strike on friday was a big one, because also Frecciarossa trains was cancelled. They generaly do not strike, it was the first time in years. 

About 8 October, keep calm and drink tee. We will know how "big" the strike is some days before. If it is only Milan it would impact only this area probably.
