Hi Greta, I booked most of my seat reservations online because it was simpler - but the eurail website also has an additional booking fee for each reservation. Roughly 2 Euros each.If you want to skip that then booking your seat reservations at the station is a possibility. The only catch here is that each train has a specific number of seats reserved for the global pass so if you haven’t booked in time you could either end up in a different coach category (Second class on a first class pass only) or you might have to pay a full fare for that ticket. This happened to me when I didn’t book Lyon to Barcelona in time and had to pay 130 Euros for a second class ticket when a first class seat reservation may have cost 15 Euros at the most. I think the extra 2 Euros is worth the time and trouble saved for a hassle-free trip. You can book them here - https://www.eurail.com/en/book-reservations
Hello Ellie, You’re looking in the right place but the difference is in the direct (HST - High Speed Trains) and the regional trains. The trains selected on your rail planner app are regional trains that don’t require additional seat reservations on the pass that you’re using. I checked on the eurail website and the Trenitalia trains are listed there as well as the ones you are looking at with seat reservations being the differentiating factor. The Trentitalia website probably doesn’t show the trains you chose as they may be a combination which includes trains run by different operators. They don’t have the same schedule you have chosen that starts at 8.20 am. They have a 7 am and a 9.35 am set of regional trains and connections.Trenitalia regional trains options. Trains that require additional seat reservations. Trains that don’t require seat reservations on your pass The trains were all on time based on the schedule provided on the rail planner app (I used it AUG through OCT 2022).
Buenas tardes. Compré 5 pases Eurail Pass de 7 días cada uno para usarlos durante mayo. ¿Puedo activarlos todos de una vez para las 7 fechas? ¿Qué debo hacer para ello? Gracias. English translation by Google - Good afternoon. I bought 5 Eurail Passes of 7 days each to use during May. Can I activate them all at once for the 7 dates? What should I do for it? Thank you.HI Miguel, The EuRail Pass is linked to the RAIL PLANNER App. You will need to sign in and link the pass to the app. After that you can create a trip (itinerary of trains) per pass and activate the pass when you use it the first time. I only used one pass and that’s what I did.
Below is the roughed-out journey we have planned around Switzerland, all by train, and over 9 days. Any suggestions, especially regarding the trains, would be greatly appreciated. Geneva - Montreux - Interlaken - Spiez - Zermatt - Andermatt - Luzern - Zurich Hello Jim,The itinerary sounds great! See if you can manage The Glacier Express from Zermatt to Andermatt. The full journey (8 hours) is Zermatt to St. Moritz and the reverse. It was one of the most breathtaking train journey’s I’ve ever experienced. The 1st class coach was incredible with it’s panoramic windows and table service with cloth napkins (Food is extra). The fare is included in the global pass but a seat reservation fee (49 CHF) is mandatory. You can check the availability here - https://www.glacierexpress.ch/en/ Tickets can be purchased roughly two months in advance. In Zermatt you must go to Club Mamacita at night (around 10 pm). I was there on a Wednesday and Thursday, and there was a Live band both nights and they
Hi Jim,The small towns in Switzerland are beautiful. I really enjoyed visiting Thun and Brienz (interlaken). St. Gallen, St. Margrethen and Chur are worth a visit too. Chur is the oldest town of Switzerland - very quaint and lovely. Gruyères for cheese is a must visit place that I managed to miss and hopefully you and your wife won’t :) Montreux has the most stunning sunset by the water. Of these Brienz is the smallest (roughly 3000 people) and was by far the most enjoyable for me. The woodcarving museum had a section where I could paint my own Swiss cow. It was the most memorable token of my visit in Switzerland.
Depends on the number of days you plan to travel for. The swiss pass can get expensive and sometimes costs as much as an eurail pass. Also the flexibility of the global pass is great if you use your travel days judiciously. I agree with @rvdborgt - compare normal tickets + seat reservations against the pass and then decide.🙂
