Sometimes the train trip is shortened and the destination filled in the interrail app is not reached. When the trip is continued from a between station, the app checks if parts of the journey are travelled twice. It was not sufficient to deactivate a part of the trip. The only way I could correct this was to deactivate the whole trip and start again including the already travelled parts of the journey. You are not obliged to reconstruct the whole trip, as you only need to have a valid QR code for the train you are travelling in. However the travel information is used to distribute the eurail/interrail revenues to the rail companies. So it is moraly better to match the actual travel trips.
I Just checked openrailwaymap.org and there max speeds as low as 40km/h. Once the tunnel opens this wil be gone unless they keep the route for local trains, (7 stations). Only at Semmering do the faster trains also stop. There are popular hiking trains along the route to see the trains.
And always check localy in the train station itself. That is the latest information. Sometime it even posible to take an earlier train because it was delayed. I then change the train in the interrail app because conductors like to see the correct train on the QR ticket. (And use the official departure time) One problem with the interrail app is that if you activate a complex journey and have to change the last train you have to delete the complete journey and reintroduce all the trains, also the one without problems. The app checks if there are parts of the journey wich are travelled twice. You cannot be on two trains al once. To prevents this I split the day in many small journeys and only activate the next journey into the ticket when needed. When the train service is disrupted or your train is delayed. You start planning the next stage at your next connection point, with the most up to date information. When travelling in Germany the trip almost never goes to plan and I other trains
I have a small backpack for day excursions, wich I put in my big backpack when I travel between lodgings. My camera and water go into the sides so I never need to unpack on the train. It is a hassle in a crowded train as you dont have space to put things down temporarely. I have a travel handbag for documents reading material (I take a lot of throwaway reading such as newspapers and magazines, a book is nice but if you want to keep it....) So I have a habit of carryring two things at all times. If I am only carrying one thing I am missing something.I would not use bags with wheels or rigid dimensions. There are stil a lot of stairs and other obstacles in public transport, certainly when you have a rushed transfer. Lifts are often out of use or very buzy. Rough ground and grind stones are a absolute disaster for bagage wheels. Big wheels are better and more resistant, but have a big penalty in weigth and los of bagage space. You should always be able to carry all the bagage in one go f
All trains go the up the Semmering pas slowly, as it is very curvy for a long climb. I think the local speed limit is 70 km/u or less. Check on openrailwaymap.org (there is a modus with speed limits). So it does not really matter wich type of train you take.
Crossing over from the Spanish train (broad gauge) to the French trains (normal gauge) is within the station. While not cross platform, it is certainly not 15 minutes. Check openrailwaymap.org (there is a modus showing track gauges)
