Did you know there are more options for border crossings than maps and timetables will tell you? If the timetables doesn't show them, it might be because it deems the distance to the stations on either side of the border too far. But if the alternative is a full-day detour, then consider this:(part 1 of this topic is here)Croatia to SerbiaThere is currently no passenger train connecting Croatia to Serbia, but there are two places where the track is in place: Tovarnik (Croatia) - Sid (Serbia)The track is there, freight trains are running one after the other, and the preparations are there for a passenger connection: there is a direct train between Villach (Austria) via Ljubljana (Slovenia) to Vinkovci (Croatia). Vinkovci is the last city in Croatia before the border with Serbia, however not of such an importance that it deserves a rail connection with Austria. Hence my thought that this train is destined to be continued to Belgrade (Serbia). Train IC 210 / D 210: Train D 211 / IC 211:

But if the alternative is a full-day detour, then consider this:Italy-SloveniaThe stations of Gorizia (Italy) and Nova Gorica (Slovenia) are not connected but are only 3,5km apart. This border crossing comes in addition to the only alternative one at Trieste.I did this walk on a Sunday morning and was prepared for dullness and emptiness, but instead found no less than 20 coffee bars with the locals enjoying dolce with their morning sip. Hungary-SlovakiaThe stations of Sátoraljaújhely (Hungary) and Slovenské Nové Mesto (Slovakia) are connected by rail but only freight trains use them. However the two stations are only 2,5km apart, leading you through the small town of Sátoraljaújhely which I found a lovely stop and with plenty of options to stay, shop and eat.
I am currently doing interrail with the mobile pass. While I am happy with the functionalities of the app, it has given me multiple stressfull moments:app not letting me enter a journey manually, and hence I could not generate a QR code. I am touch with support to get myself refunded the ticket that I had to buy instead. All journeys disappeared, only to re-appear after 10 seconds or so. Those 10 seconds are a very long time with the ticket inspector standing next you, in a far away country with no common language. Did anyone else experience this? Or this one: Instead of saying 'Show ticket' in the yellow bar, it says 'add a journey': . It is totally unclear why the app would say so at this location. Restarting (takes multiple minutes) did not solve it, but later on that same day, it is back to normal. I will consider doing the paper pass next time to avoid these issues. It really took the fun of it all away.
