I have Passes for my family.  I successfully made a seat reservation a week ago for one journey/travel day.  Now I am trying to make one for Sat 9th of July, Venice-Rome.  I can find the options using the Eurail ‘Book your Seat Reservations site’.  Some say ‘seat reservations unavailable’, others have availability.  I can add a specific reservation to my ‘Cart’ and add the billing details, but when I try the “Continue to traveler details>’ button it just boots me back to the eurail.com home page.

I have tried 2 different browsers from my laptop, and from the Railplanner app.  So far it’s that same step (traveler details) that boots me out.

I can see that there are seats available (for regular price) on italiarail.com.  I have tried looking up the trains and potentially making a reservation via tickets.oebb.at, but although I can find the routes and select tickets for them I have not been able to do this step as instructed by eurail for OBB:

Before you pick your train, go to the top right corner and click on 'who is going?'. Here you click on 'add discount' and scroll down or search for 'Interrail/Eurail - Globalpass', then select it and click confirm.

Any tips? Is it just that there aren’t eurail pass-holder seats left even though the RailPlanner app and Eurail site shows them as available?  And/or should I just try again tomorrow?

Update - I was able to use the OBB site for Venezia-Roma with the eurail/interail GlobalPass discount, so at least I was able to figure that approach out.

However for other attempts at seat reservations (on other routes OBB doesn’t cover), the eurail seat reservation system still isn’t working...

@motmots I’m glad you posted this I’m having the same problem today on the Eurail website.  As a new user I thought it might be me but sounds like the seat reservation system is not working.  I’ll try again tomorrow.

@Coleen

The advice from the experienced travellers in the Community is to only make the reservation through Interrail/Eurail if no other option are available.

Here is some useful information from the experienced travellers in the Community regarding both planning, reservations and activation of pass and travel days.

Planning

The rail planner is normally not up to date, as it only is updated once a month, so to be sure of the time table you better check the timetable and availability on the websites of the national railways. The bigger national railways, like DB (Germany) SBB (Switzerland) and ÖBB (Austria) cover several countries.

Reservations

The advice from the experienced travellers in the community is to use other ways to make reservations than the Interrail/Eurail website.  You can look at the guide in the link:

https://community.eurail.com/train-connections-reservations-47/how-to-get-reservations-105

If you, after having looked at the guide, have questions about how to make specific reservation, please give your travel details (departure date, time and route) preferably in a new topic, and you will get advice.

Please note that Interrail/Eurail charges an extra fee of 2 EUR per person and ticket in addition to the fee for the seat reservation.

Activation of pass

During the activation process, when you choose the start day of the validity of the pass, the first day of the validity period is automatically made a travel day, even if you don't enter a journey, the advice is therefore not to activate the pass before the first travel day as you only can deactivate the pass before 00.00 on the day the validity starts. If your travel plans change in the last moment you will loose travel days if you have activated the pass in advance.

It can be wise to make a test and activate the pass with a start date well in the future and then deactivate the pass immediately, just to see that everything works.

 Activation of travel day

The advice from the experienced travellers in the community is also never to activate a travel day, that is connect a journey to your pass, until just before boarding the train, otherwise you might loose a travel day if your travel plans change in a late stage  You can't delete a travel day in the past. A travel day can only be deleted until 23.59 CET the day before the travel day.

You are not alone…..took me nearly 3 hours to pay for the reservations in my cart…..I was informed on here by many seasoned people that this is quite common. Please read the many responses on this site…..many good tips. None of this stuff with site issues makes any sense!  Keep trying and ask for tips.
Good luck!
