I would like to book a family pass but haven’t done so yet.

We will be travelling from the UK on a particular day: and on that day staying in France with friends who will only be able to meet us at the nearest train station at a reasonably early time in the day. Ie.  don’t want to waste time or money buying the Interrail pass before we know exactly which reservations are on offer and whether it suits.

I have gone to the generic Eurrail / Interrail help & support page about how you do this but still can’t see how I can look up which seat reservations are available. Nothing comes up when I enter our dates. Help!

I would prefer to use a helpful website than download a space and data consuming app. So no app recommendations, please.

Queries:

  • I want to know before booking the Eurail pass whether it’s worth buying the first / second class pass. Where can I do that? And see all the available seat reservations for the different travel legs and days, before buying a pass?
  • I’d like to know if you can book kids’ seats for free via the Eurostar site, or do you need to pay for them first, then get a refund?

Lastly - not urgently - am I missing something? When I last used an Interrail pass in the 90s, it was the easiest thing to do and way to travel ever, now it seems clunky and admin-heavy, from the initial impression I’m getting. But perhaps that’s more true for the Eurostar leg?

Thank you for all the help you can think of!

There is a limited number of pass holder seats on the Eurostar between London and mainland Europe. On popular departures and during high season those sell out weeks, and sometimes months in advance.

The best place to see the availability of passholder seats and make reservations on the Eurostar is

https://www.b-europe.com/EN/Booking/Pass#TravelWish

If you don't get any result, press "later trains" and eventually you will find the next available connection.

If you have a mobile pass you need to generate a Pass Cover Number in order to make the reservation at b-europe. You do that here in the PCN generator:

First, you can't check availability on interrail.eu until you've bought a pass (which is a shame !) but there are other websites.

High-speed trains in France, Spain, Italy + Eurostar, Thalys and some cross-border routes require seat reservations. There is pretty much never a quota for passholders so as long as you can buy regular tickets, there are seats left.

Eurostar and Thalys have a limited quota (30€ seat reservation). They can sell out weeks in advance so do not wait longer. Those are the biggest issues. If there are no seats available to Paris, check availability to Lille : much more seats and the journey does not take much longer (you swap to a TGV at Lille-Europe). Let us know your travel date and we'll gladly help :)

Children 4 y.o. and older also need to pay for the Eurostar seat reservation AFAIK. At least it's the case on all other trains

Check the link Anna posted and book there (less fee than on interrail.eu).

Btw you can buy your pass on myinterrail.co.uk and save a few £ !

For the rest of Europe : it is way easier and there are always reservation-free itineraries. Eurostar is a bottleneck…

Check these links for seat reservations in general :

Do not hesitate for questions, mentioning route, date and departure time.
