The national railway carrier of Norway, VY, has announced that the rail route between Narvik in Norway and Abisko in Sweden is disrupted due to a previous derailment in Vassijaure in Sweden since December 2023.

The Swedish Transport Administration's latest forecast is that the track will not open for passenger traffic between Björnfjell – Björkliden at least until June. For details about replacement buses on the full route between Narvik – Björnfjell – Björkliden – Abisko and further, please read the VY disruption announcement.

We recommend checking our timetable to plan your train journeys accordingly.

@Sarah W The wrong date for the start of the passenger traffic to Narvik has been set out as a message to lots of travellers. Will there be an update sent with the correct date? Travellers in the Swedish FB group for train travellers are confused.

Hi @AnnaB Do you know which message was sent out with the wrong start date and when they received it? As for the end date the VY disruption announcement states that the disruption will end on May 31st. We go by what the official carrier website says.

The message was sent with the date 31st of May, but the information from Trafikverket, which is the authority who approves when the railway will open for passenger traffic, is that route will open, at the earliest, on the 18th of June. This as the tracks have to be checked thoroughly once all the snow has melted.

@Sarah W VY says that the trafic will open in June, without specifying a specific date.

Hi @AnnaB - I do see that indeed Trafikverket says June 18th. We’ve updated this post and the website to say “The Swedish Transport Administration's latest forecast is that the track will not open for passenger traffic between Björnfjell – Björkliden at least until June.”
