The landslide at Maurienne last August which blocked the line between Paris and Milan has forced me to be more creative in my travel plans to Italy. I am now very much looking forward to my journey through Switzerland this September. However it would be quite nice if it was to possible take a direct train from Lyon to Milan when I return to Italy at Christmas. (I am aware of the bus replacement service circumventing the landslide, but that does not appeal!)I keep searching the internet for any information giving a progress report on the work being done to clear the landslide but have not found anything later than statements made around January 2024. Has anyone found any more current information about how the work is going, or seen any up to date predictions about when the line might reopen at Maurienne?Peter
To get onto Eurostar with a ‘normal’ ticket, you scan the ticket at the barrier. The ticket bar code has encoded your train ticket which includes your seat reservation and the barrier opens. However with interrail do you not have two separate components - your interral ticket showing that you are eligible to travel in Europe that day and your seat reservation for a particuar Eurostar train. So what do you do in order to board a Eurostar train - and does it work any differently compared to when using a normal ticket? Peter
Our route for our planned 7 day pass is all worked out. 3 days travelling out. 3 days travelling back and one day spare to be used at some point during our holiday.I read all the time about only activating your pass at the last minute in case you forget that it is already activated and problems arise and dates need changing. I am more exercised about getting used to using the pass and learning in advance about its ins and outs. I would much prefer, therefore, activating the pass early on, inputting all the journeys and and checking that I am totally confindent in using it. I would then deactivate it and activate again much closer to our departure date. Are there any things to be careful about, if I do this? Is there a reason why this might not be a good idea? Peter
I should explain two things:(a) My wife and I know precisely which trains we plan to take for our trip.(b) When we travel overseas we like to have both belt and braces. So in the past we have always had both of our tickets on each of our phones and also have had printed copies. Will this work as a plan for our trip which involve seven days of travel. Some time before we travel we will activate our passes and put each of our own tickets onto our respective passes. We will then take screenshots of each of our tickets which we will then ensure are put on BOTH of our phones. We will also have make printouts of the screenshots of the tickets. Then as security against something going wrong and having to change our plans, we will deactivate the passes, and we will then reactivate them much closer to the time of travel and this time input the tickets for real.Peter
I am thinking of buying a eurail pass. It will certainly be cheaper than paying for the journeys I have planned through normal booking methods. However I will want seat reservations on all my journeys (in France and Italy) and I would not want to proceed with the purchase of a Eurail pass if this was not guaranteed, I am too early to book seats on the actual journeys planned. However I thought I would test out the system by seeing if it is possible to book up seats on certain journeys but just stopping short of the paying up stage. It seems, however, that I cannot test out the reservation system until I have paid for a pass. And I am not prepared to pay for the pass until I have tested the reservation system. Catch 22!! Any suggestions how I might get round this problem? Peter
