It’s not possible to buy this reservation at a ticket counter in france. The only way which might work for using an AVE inside France with a pass is to buy a reservation with the train staff before departure or to use a TGV instead. The AVE has still seats available for today, according to RENFE.com.
Yes, as long as you don’t take another train the day after and the following day lies within the validity period of your pass, you will be fine. I even had a similar situation using the same night train in the opposite direction last summer. And yes: The 4.90 € reservation is enough for that train (it’s even not required to reserve a seat for the IC part but strongly recomended of course) because it’s branded as a DB IC. However, I wouldn’t stay in a seat car cause on this route, they often use open space carriages. You can also get your reservation for 3 € using the ÖBB website.
For trains without reservations: You can sit on any unoccupied seat. For less crowded carriages, go to the front or the end of the train.Trains with optional reservations: The reserved seats are indicated by a little piece of paper or a LED screen, which shows from where to where this seat is reserved.
On which date are you taking the train to split?I think it’s unlikely that the trains are full because it’s low-season at the moment.Tip: If buying reservations on the ÖBB website fails, try to book domestic hungarian trains on the MAV (hungarian railways) website using “only seat reservation” and/or book every train separatly.I checked the only connection with the single change in Balatonszentgyörgy using the direct train IC 204 from Budapest to Zagreb. It seems you can book it from Budapest to Zagreb but not from a intermediate station. But it will be necessary to stay a night in Zagreb.
Daytime train reservation (the one at 15:18) should be possible online via the ÖBB website for 3€. Use Interrail as a discount and choose one-way-ticket.If it doesn’t work, try it at a ticket office in Croatia.
Just for your Information: The 16:18 Train from Lucerne is one of the few ones on this route, that runs directly to Milano Centrale (without the change in Lugano): Arrival at Milano Centrale at 19.50.
