Hi All,

I’m planning a family trip to Switzerland and was hoping to experience the Bernina Express. However, after checking the SBB website for reservations, I found that while tickets are available, there’s no reservation option for the Bernina Express since it is sold out. Furthermore, it’s unavailable on my planned date (and for the entire week, since there is only one Bernina Express train departing at 10:06 am). Since I can’t change my travel dates, I learned from a forum that it’s still possible to take a regular train ride from Tirano to St. Moritz. We’ll be staying in Lugano and plan to take the train from Lugano to Tirano, then return to Lucerne after the Tirano to St. Moritz journey.

Could you recommend the best trains for these 3 segments?

  • Which morning train would you suggest from Lugano to Tirano between 6:30 am and 8:00 am?
  •
  • Which specific regular train should we book for the Tirano to St. Moritz leg? How much time is recommended to spend in St. Moritz before heading to Lucerne?
  • Do you have any tips for booking or traveling on the regular train from Tirano to St. Moritz?
  • Which coach type would be ideal for the Tirano to St. Moritz route, and do you have any seat recommendations for better views or comfort, considering the January weather?
  •
  • Which evening train would you suggest from St. Moritz to Lucerne?

Thank you so much for your help and advice. I truly appreciate your suggestions and look forward to hearing from you!

You can always use the unreserved coaches on the Bernina Express, as well any coach on the regional trains which run along the same line. In fact that’s what most people would recommend.

Don’t book anything. Just turn up and take whichever train is next. There are trains at least hourly, and the regional trains are just as good as the Bernina Express in terms of quality.

I wouldn't feel the need to recommend any departure specifically, and absolutely wouldn’t recommend reserving. It’s an unnecessary hassle and expense.

The only thing to watch out for in January is sunrise and sunset times.
