Travel recommendations are always best when they come from friends and locals—those who know the magic of a destination firsthand. Earlier this year, we turned to our travellers to ask: "What is the most scenic train ride in Europe?”
We’re always on the lookout for more scenic routes! What did we miss? Do you have a favourite route to add? Let us know!

Hi @Sarah W
4. Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen (Switzerland)
I would add that it is possible to continue from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen or Mürren BLM via Grütschalp. There aren't many other options to take a mountain cogwheel train or a cable car with the pass.
Some good inspiration for this year’s travels! I’m already planning how to reach some of these places. I would also add
Settle to Carlisle (England)
This line which crosses the Pennines through stunning scenery was saved from closure by some very forceful campaigning in the 1980s. A good slower route to reach Scotland or the Lake District. Local volunteers run a shop in Settle station, a refreshment trolley on some trains, and have published a great audioguide to the route.
Good article, but I would highly recommend to number 8 to continue until the end of the line from Pinhao to Pocinho as otherwise you are going to miss the best (most remote) part of the line IMO.
Also in Romania the line from Salva to Sighetu Marmatiei is an absolute highlight… and should be still with windows to open.
@MartinM Thank you for your thoughtful feedback and recommendations! Extending the journey from Pinhão to Pocinho does sound like it shouldn’t be missed. Great tip!
The Salva to Sighetu Marmației route in Romania also sounds incredible, especially with those classic trains where you can open the windows. Thanks for sharing your expertise!
