Storm Daniel caused devastating floods in parts of Greece, especially in the Thessaly region. The railway line between Athens-Larissa-Thessaloniki is severely damaged, and it will take a long time before trains can operate again. 

 

Roads will be repaired faster; however, no replacement buses are possible for the Athens-Larissa-Thessaloniki rail service.

 

Train service on the Larissa-Thessaloniki part of the line may resume before full service (Athens-Thessaloniki) is reinstated.

Travelled across Europe from London to Romania without a hitch then got to Greece and wish we’d planned to go elsewhere because our Interrail Global pass is practically useless in Greece.

Staff at the empty Thessaloniki railway station confirmed that there are no trains from Thessaloniki to Athens and no idea when they’ll start again.
Buses are available from main bus station and we managed to get a ticket for 40 Euros each for the 6 1/2 hour journey to Athens.
