Spain into Portugal

Hi there, we have an inter rail pass and will be in Madrid in August. We wish to travel to Lisbon. We are happy to head north and come down into Portugal from Galicia (Ourense) or to travel to Salamanca and across to Coimbra and south to Lisbon from there. When I look on the Inter Rail map, it all seems possible but when I try and look at timetables or reserve seats, it comes up with nothing. I know I’m early to book but usually I am informed that reservations etc. will be possible 90 days prior. With this route it just indicates that it’s not possible. Can someone advise please? Thanks so much

The only trains from Spain to Portugal are from Vigo to Porto (reservation free of charge) and from Badajoz to Entroncamento (no reservations). Also see:

From Ourense, it makes sense to travel via Vigo. There's only 2 trains per day though.

For reservations in August, it may still be to early. In addition, for MD trains, reservations are not possible online.

There are very few trains from Spain to Portugal:

  • From Vigo to Porto, twice a day. Vigo can be reached from Ourense by train.
  • From Badajoz to Entroncamento, also twice a day

There are no passenger trains from Salamanca towards Portugal unfortunately. There are buses though.
