Hey all!

Ok, I am planning a family trip on the train from Paris - Switzerland.  I have added the trains/times that I need, but the train in the middle does not have a way to book a seat.  Since I have it added to my trip, and I am not activating my pass until March 14th, is that ok?  Basically, I am worried that once I activate my pass and get my qr codes, that specific leg of the trip will be full which would totally mess up all the connections. Or since I do have this leg saved to my trips, am I ok?  This is my first time traveling via train if you cant tell, lol.  I have seat reservations for the first one, but the second one is what I am worries about.

As we can see from the absence of “seat reservation” block, there’s no reservation on this route (as usual on the regional trains (TER), bar a few exceptions on longer distance routes, the trip planner would tell you).

In this case you just have to save it to your trip and add to your pass (like any other train you take) and that’s it.

Usually swiss trains doesn’t require reservations, I’ve made that same route Basel - Strasbourg (and Strasbourg - Basel) a couple of times in summer 2023 and there was lot of free seats so I don’t think you should be worry about that. Another tip I could give you it’s to download the SBB app (Swiss train app) and they usually shows you live information like how full or empty the train is going. I’m not so sure if it will have the information in this one because its shared rout with France but you could give it a try and check this days at that time how is it going.

Note this is not a Swiss train, it’s entirely run by SNCF and managed by the French region Grand Est. So you won’t have ridership information from SBB (SNCF Connect now also sometimes show the estimated attendance but it’s not as accurate).

At this time of the day there should be plenty of space on this train (except maybe if it’s a peak vacation departure day).

Hi,

You cannot book a seat reservation and do not need one, as it is a regional train.

If you want a seat reservation from Paris to Basel you can take the TGV Lyria, but it will be more expensive (10 to 20€ more per person), if you can find a matching time. If you depart 30min earlier, you will have a long wait at Basel SBB, but you will be sure and you will have a direct train. I would also note that your connection is not very robust, as you only have 20min in Basel, coming from a regional train, and travelling with family. You should be fine, but check that you can have a train later in case you miss your connection (in Switzerland, you will not have to bother about the reservation).
