Seat Reservations Required?

We are travelling from Interlaken to Lyon (one day) in mid June and we have a 1st class Eurail pass.  It appears that seat reservations are optional.  1) If we don’t book a seat, can we still access the 1st class carriage? 2) is there any danger we won’t get a seat on the train if we don’t reserve a seat?

You don’t need seat reservations at all in Switzerland, or on the TER from Geneva to Lyon to access either class.

If you avoid the busiest (commuting) trains, you won't have a problem. Reservations aren’t possible on the TER to Lyon. They’re theoretically possible in Switzerland, but expensive and a pain to make, and they’re so rare that they might well not be honoured!
