Zurich to Munich - DB website does not show direct route options?

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. Just a slight stroke of bad luck that there are works happening then! I’ve just had a look at the Zurich - Innsbruck route and it does look quite gorgeous. 

Reading around various forums, I assume that seat reservations are a must on this route?

In summer and on weekends it's a must yeah. On an October weekday perhaps not but it'll only cost 3€ through ÖBB, incl. seat map -> worth it for the peace of mind.

I’d go via Innsbruck and if you have a first class pass book the panorama car on EC163 at 08:40. If the weather is good the views are lovely. This train also has an excellent restaurant car for breakfast. In my view this is the very best train and I’ve done the journey many times. For the panorama car you must reserve to get a seat in it.  As advised use OBB to book.

May I please ask a question regarding the panorama car booking on the OBB site? Am I correct in understanding that all I need to do on the OBB site is input the number of us travelling (3) and make the reservation, then on the day just show our Eurail pass?

When you define the number of passengers on oebb.at, choose “Interrail / Eurail - Globalpass” as discount and select “One way tickets and day tickets”.

After selecting the train, don’t forget to click on “Choose your seat here” and select the Panorama car:

You must define the journey in the Rail Planner app and show the Eurail Pass. Reservations are not mandatory and will not be checked.

Yes, this is the only train with a panoramic car.

You can select this train to make the seat reservations and select the same train in the Rail Planner app. To obtain a ticket (QR code) and use a day if you have a flexi pass, you must also activate every journey separately, but note that this function is only available after the activation of the pass.

The Rail Planner is not updated every day, you should also install the official apps of the railway companies, for example SBB Mobile, ÖBB Scotty, DB Navigator, and check the actual timetable 1-2 days before departure and also for last minute changes (delays, cancellations).
