Madrid - Barcelona change reservations

I hope somebody can help here.

My family and I are traveling from Barcelona to Madrid and back again in April. I have made seat reservations using the eurail site and have received allocated seats on the train.

The seats are not together however and have been randomly assigned in the coach. I have tried to update these using the app but been told that this is not possible. I have contacted Eurail customer support and they have also said that this is not possible.

I spoke with Renfe who told me that there are lots of available seats on both of the trains we have reservations on, however they are not able to change the reservations made through the Eurail site.

The customer support agent from Renfe actually made reservations with seats together for me and gave me a reservation number and said if I can update the reservations in Eurail using that number then there is a table seat for the 4 of us available on the train we are due to take. This is not possible as far as I can work out using the Eurail website. I also contacted Eurail support quoting the resevation number that Renfe gave me but they were also unable to help.

Does anybody have any ideas how I can update the reservations so that we an sit together on the train, please?

Thank you

Only Eurail support can do this, if they can select specific seats (I'm not sure whether they can). They can only change their own reservations, so they can't do anything with a reservation number you received from Renfe.

Did you make these reservations in one transaction? Because then you should normally be seated together.

Hi @rvdborgt ,

thanks for your reply. It seems that the Renfe system doesn’t allow the Eurail system to make these changes. At least that is what I have been told by Eurail support and I trust their knowledge with this stuff.

And yes, I did make the reservations in a single transaction which is why I was surprised the seats were separate. I assumed that we had been assigned these seats because the train was busy but when I spoke to Renfe they said that there were plenty of seats available. It is very strange.

I thought about cancelling the reservation and re-booking them in the hope that we would be together next time, but it was going to cost about € 24 for each leg and there was no guarantee that it would work.

I think we are going to have to reply on the kindness of other passengers to move so that we can sit together.

Thanks again
