Do I need a physical printed reservation ticket?

Hello,

I have read through a few questions here and couldn’t find a clear answer.

I came across this on the interrail.eu site:

The Self-Service lets you book e-ticket reservations up to 3 hours before its departure. You'll receive an e-ticket which we recommend you print at home.

They recommend to print the e-ticket reservations. Now I am wondering if its okay to not print it and if I can use the e-ticket? Has anyone ever struggled with an e-ticket?

Generally, it's not a problem for optional reservations not to print them (since they're not required anyway). For mandatory ones, it depends on the train or train company.

For night trains, it's wise to print it since the coach attendant will collect reservations and give them back in the morning.

By the way, Interrail's self-service does not always provide e-tickets. For some reservations, it only has paper versions. I also try to avoid the self-service because of its extra fees.

There is a non-exhaustive list here. For more detailed advice, please mention details of trains you'd like to book (origin, destination, date, departure time).
