Timetable on the rail planner shows ‘not available to passholders’ (doesn't even show the train unless prompted) but train cancelled because booked with a rail pass on Eurail. What does this mean? Many thanks.

If it’s a direct Intercity, your pass will be valid on it. You need to pay a reservation fee of €3. Is that what you paid at Rail Europe?
Sometimes the results show an itinerary where you get off the train in Villa San Giovanni and take the fast ferry across to Sicily - because this is often quicker then waiting for them to load the train onto the slow ferry. In that case, the fast ferry isn’t included.

“Not in pass network” means the railpass isn’t valid on this train.
Where do you see "train cancelled because booked with a rail pass on Eurail”? Do you have a screenshot?

Sorry ‘train cancelled’ was an autocorrect blooper! Should have read ‘train can be booked with rail pass on eurail’.
It was the 07.26 from Roma Termini direct to Siracusa (the train that goes on the ferry). The Rail Planner just said ‘’not available to passholders’ but no difficulty getting a reservation on RailEurope. Will the train still accept a rail pass with a reservation issued by RailEurope??

What the rail planner app says is in fact irrelevant because it's incomplete, often out of date and generally unreliable. Check timetables on trenitalia.com and book your reservation via Rail Europe.
If the train still isn't shown correctly in the app on your travel date, then check for app updates and if that doesn't help, then add it manually.

Yes, it is Intercity 723 and I paid €3 for the seat reservation. It just doesn’t appear on the Railplanner website.
Yes, ralderton, there is a faster ferry.The direct train leaves Rome 90 minutes before the one where you change at San Giovanni but then goes across on the same ferry and gets to Siracusa on the same train on the other side. But I really wanted to go on the one where the train goes on the ferry! What I was afraid of was getting on the first train and then being told by the ticket collector that my rail pass wasn’t valid!
Many thanks to all for your help. I haven’t done an Interail pass holiday since they first came out in 1972 and it’s a bit different now!
