I am travelling for the next week around Hungary with a 1st class Eurail pass and will use a number of domestic IC trains (such as Budapest to Pecs and to Debrecen).

Am I right that I must have a paid reservation to board these trains?

What is the best / cheapest way to book these?

I see I can book for close to $6 each through Eurail, likely less through Czech railways. Is it possible to book at ticket desks in Hungary, or even on the train? Many of these trains run frequently and I would like to leave it to the last minute to decide what trains to take (which is part of the point of Eurail….)

You indeed need a seat reservation in Hungarian IC trains. Buying on board is not recommended; I'm quite sure that will be more expensive.

Booking a domestic seat reservation online is possible on https://jegy.mav.hu/

For 2nd class, using the "International pass, ticket or global price” discount works just fine.

However, for 1st class, this option does not only give you a seat reservation, but also a supplement to upgrade from 2nd to 1st class, which you don't need and which doubles the price. For 1st class it's therefore best to use the discount "MÁV-START service card 1st class (free of charge)”. This results in just a reservation and nothing else. This also works on the MÁV ticket machines. Price is HUF 990 (€2.49); if booked online HUF 940 (€2.37). MÁV also provides a seat map to pick your seat if you book online.

Booking on cd.cz is also possible and costs CZK 77 (€3.06). On predaj.zssk.sk it's €3.

Booking via Eurail is not recommended because it's always more expensive (€5 in this case).
