Travel days and Night trains

Buonasera,

avrei bisogno di avere una risposta che non riesco a capire..

Se io decido di prendere un global pass e viaggiare di notte come faccio per risparmiare “giorni di viaggio”?

I miei spostamenti sono questi:

  1. treno diretto notturno verona - monaco di baviera, partenza 15/07
  2. treno diretto notturno monaco - berlino, partenza 16/07
  3. treno diretto diurno berlino - amburgo, partenza 18/07
  4. treno con 1 cambio notturno amburgo - copenaghen (cambio a neumenster), partenza 18/07
  5. treno diurno andata e ritorno copenaghen - malmo, in giornata del 20/07
  6. treno con 2 cambi notturno copenaghen - francoforte sul meno, partenza del 20/07
  7. treno con 1 cambio diurno francoforte - verona, partenza del 22/07

Bene, avendo questi spostamenti mi bastano 5 giorni di viaggio oppure 7 giorni di viaggio??

I need an answer that I can't understand..

If I decide to take a global pass and travel by night, how can I save "travel days"?

My movements are these:

direct night train Verona - Munich, departure 15/07
direct night train from Munich to Berlin, departure 16/07
direct daytime train berlin - hamburg, departure 18/07
train with 1 night change from Hamburg - Copenhagen (change in neumenster), departure 18/07
daytime train copenhagen - malmo return, same day 20/07
night train with 2 changes copenhagen - frankfurt am main, departure on 20/07
train with 1 daytime change between Frankfurt and Verona, departure on 22/07
Well, having these movements, is 5 travel days or 7 travel days enough for me?

The day of departure counts. As long as you board the night train before midnight, it only counts as one day. Per your itinerary 5 days might be enough but it depends on how you do Copenhagen - Frankfurt : if you leave at 23:55, you’ll need 2 pass days. Otherwise buy a regular ticket until Valby (the first stop). From there use the pass as the train leaves at midnight. I’d recommend a 7-day pass or a 5-day pass and you book Copenhagen - Malmö separately.

Night trains are extremely popular and some dates are already sold out. Remember that you need to add about 30€ for a couchette.

  • Verona - Munich 15.07 : only seats available (not recommended) → 13,70€
  • Munich - Berlin 16.07 : only ICE trains on this route → optional reservation, normal seat on a fully lit carriage
  • board at Hamburg-Altona at 23:58 (instead of changing at Neumünster) → normal seat on a fully lit carriage, 5€ reservation
  • Is Copenhagen - Odense - Hamburg - Frankfurt your itinerary ? This is not possible as Odense - Hamburg Hbf is sold out. Solution : Copenhagen - Hamburg-Altona (seat) and from there to Frankfurt

Your itinerary looks a bit ambitious to me but it certainly is doable. You won’t get much sleep at any point during your trip. I’d skip Frankfurt if you don’t have a specific reason to go there. A good option to Copenhagen (2 pass days) :

  • EC Verona - Innsbruck 15:01 - 18:36 (or earlier) 10€ Brenner Pass surcharge (no surcharge if you take regional trains)
  • Nightjet Innsbruck - Hannover 20:12 - 06:49 14€ seat, 34€ couchette, 74€ sleeper
  • ICE Hannover - Hamburg-Harburg 08:36 - 09:41
  • S-Bahn to Altona (due to engineering works no ICE trains run)
  • IC Hamburg-Altona - Copenhagen 10:58 - 15:44 5€ seat reservation

On the way back you could take the night train to Berlin (snalltaget.se), either from Malmö or Copenhagen (suburbs)  :

  • Malmö C 22:25 or Copenhagen Oerestad - Berlin Hbf 23:07 - 08:47 18€ seat, 44€ couchette

I checked your suggestion on interrail schedule table, but I can't found these route:

  • Nightjet Innsbruck - Hannover 20:12 - 06:49 14€ seat, 34€ couchette, 74€ sleeper
  • Malmö C 22:25 or Copenhagen Oerestad - Berlin Hbf 23:07 - 08:47 18€ seat, 44€ couchette

And, why do you already know that the train Odense - Hamburg Hbf is sold out, if I can see it on interrail website and I will on July??

Now, do I count correctly days of interrail ticket? I did understand correctly if I take some trans in a day e in the evening I take a night train that departure before 23.59 and it arrive the next day in the new destination??

Yes you counted right. Exactly, as long as you board the last train before midnight, it counts as one travel day.

Only remember to book the Nightjet to Hannover and Snalltaget ASAP (seat or couchette) and some other trains a few weeks before departure (most will be busy so you might have to stand for a while).

  • 2 x 10€ Brennerpass surcharge (+ 3€ seat reservation, very recommended) for Verona - Innsbruck and Munich - Verona tickets.oebb.at → add Interrail as a discount and select one-way tickets
  • 3€ Hannover - Hamburg tickets.oebb.at
  • 30 DKK Hamburg - Copenhagen https://travel.b-europe.com/dsb-rail/en/reservation-only#TravelWish
  • 3€ Berlin - Munich tickets.oebb.at (maybe not necessary)
