Hello,

4 of us will be doing a 3 week trip in Europe next May and using the trains to get around.  On a direct route I see some trains need seat reservations and some do not, while the travel time is the same.  Is there an advantage to the trains that have seat reservations vs the ones that do not?  One example I looked at the seat reservations were about $65 each. I attached a picture as an example.  We will be getting a 1st class global ticket.  Thanks!!!

The trains requiring reservations are long-distance trains to northern Switzerland, while the trains not requiring reservations is regional trains. I would choose the regional trains, as they are at least good enough, they give you the freedom to choose which departure you want to use on the day and the seat reservation fee won't be worth it for such a short ride when there are good alternatives.

I did exactly that journey and the local train is perfect. Save some pennies for Switzerland!
