I will be travelling soon on a 2-month pass but am likely to get back to my home country (France) well before its expiry date. I understand that I cannot travel any more in France with it, but can I then make my own way to a neighbouring country and continue to travel there as long as the pass remains valid (without of course attempting to return to France using the pass)?

The more I think about it, the more it seems possible, unless there is a clause stating that travel must end on return to the home country.

Sure, you can do whatever you want.

The only restriction is that you may travel on 2 of your pass days in your country of residence. They can be used at any time if you wish to.

Basically compare when it makes sense to buy a ticket or use a pass day (+ likely reservation).

Btw domestic Intercités/TGV reservations can be obtained for free at SNCF ticket counters if you mention "parcours d'approche Interrail". Not all staff are aware of the offer though...
